Steamboats on the Western Rivers: An Economic and Technological History (Dover Books on Transportation, Maritime)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (January, 1994)
Authors: Louis C. Hunter and Beatrice Jones Hunter
Average review score:

Surprisingly interesting and fun reading.
I highly recommend this book. I was assigned Steamboats on the Western Rivers in a graduate level course at University of Missouri-St. Louis about ten years ago. I'm now re-reading it for the second time...it is just that good!

I was glad to see it reprinted in paperback. When I first read it I had to get it through inter-library loan from Rolla, Missouri...there were no copies in St. Louis or Chicago! This new printing is most welcome.

If you have an interest in Westward Expansion, the Civil War, or the growth of technology then this book should be on your "must read" list.

The Story of King Arthur (Dover Children's Thrift Classics)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (January, 1995)
Authors: Tom Crawford and John Green
Average review score:

An adequate introduction to the Arthurian legend!
I've always been fascinated with all things Arthurian and so I picked up _The Story of King Arthur_ by Tom Crawford. Included in this book are stories of the Sword in the Stone, the Round Table, Sir Lancelot, Morgan le Fay, Merlin, Guenevere and much more. I feel this book would be a nice way to introduce children to the legend. It contains just enough magic and daring exploits to keep them interested. It would also be satisfactory for older children or adults who want to reacquaint themselves with the tale. Though certainly not the best I've seen, the illustrations were nice and used in such a way as to bring the story to life while not taking from it. All in all, a pleasant, quick read at a great price.

The Story of Peter Pan (Dover Children's Thrift Classics)

Average review score:

delightful story
This book tells the fascinating story of Peter Pan, Tinker Bell and the Darling children and their adventures in Never-Never-Never Land. They fight with pirates and enjoy their freedom. Some of the original illustrations by Alice B. Woodward are included here as well as modern plates. A nice book especially for young readers

Symphonie Fantastique: (Episode in the Life of an Artist): Op. 14 (Dover Miniature Scores)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (April, 2003)
Author: Hector Berlioz
Average review score:

Classical Scores [inexpensive]!
The size of the book is perfect. Small enough to carry with you on the bus ride to work, but large enough to easily read.

Don't be scared off by the small print. If you've ever taken a music class where you analyze music, then you should be used to this print. And even if you haven't worked with such small print, you'll get used to the size quickly. Lastly, if you ever want to blow-up the score on a photo-copier, the resolution does not drop off at all.

Again, the price is the best part....

If you're looking for the best recording of Symphonie Fantastique, check out Muit's at Philadelphia. Don't be fooled by the budget price, it's fantastique!

Symphony No. 2 in C Minor ("Resurrection") (Dover Miniature Scores)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (April, 2003)
Author: Gustav Mahler
Average review score:

Wonderful edition of a legendary piece!
Gustav Mahler is one of the last truely great symphony writers. His orchestrations are vast and his use of tone shows his true mastery of composition. This edition is the perfect book for any music lover, especially Mahler fans. It is small enough to slip easily into a purse or jacket pocket for use in the concert hall or in a bookbag or backpack for school. It is ideal for the professional conductor and compsoer as well as the music fan who wishes to own a written copy of the greatest symphony ever written. Also, its wide margins are perfect for note taking or analysis. This is truely the perfect score for the music lover. I own about 5 and plan on adding to my collection very shortly. Other great Dover items include the miniature scores for Beethoven's 5th and 9th symphonies, which are among the standard literature for every major orchestra worldwide, and the miniature score of Mozart's powerful Requiem Mass in D minor.

Symphony No. 3 in E-Flat Major, Op. 55 "Eroica" (Dover Miniature Scores)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (April, 2003)
Author: Ludwig Van Beethoven
Average review score:

Very good. Right size.
I love Beethoven's 3rd symphony, but as I will never be able to conduct an orchestra, I close my room's door, put the Eroica CD at full volume, and with my Eroica miniature score I'm able to conduct an ethereal orchestra in my mind.
I really enjoy listening and reading music at the same time, specially beethoven.

Symphony No. 40 in G Minor, K550 & Symphony No. 41 in C Major, K551 "Jupiter" (Dover Miniature Scores)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (April, 2003)
Author: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Average review score:

Another Great Dover Miniature
This edition is a very inexpensive compilation of Mozart's two most famous symphonies. The engraving is clear and small (as in all Dover Miniatures) and the edition is handsomely priced. The one interesting aspect of this edition is that it gives the alternate Oboe and Clarinet parts--results of a later revision by Mozart--above the staff containing the original text. This is both mildly confusing and also enlightening--I don't know exactly what to think!

Symphony No. 9 in E Minor, Op. 95 ("from the New World") (Dover Miniature Scores)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (April, 2003)
Author: Antonin Dvorak
Average review score:

Very Small, but Very Good
This was the first Dover Miniature score that I bought, but it was so good (especially for the price) that it induced me to buy more--now, I am the proud owner of six of these and have given one to a friend. The engraving is TINY, but it is also clear and readable. For the price, this is one of the best editions available.

The Tale of Jemima Puddle-Duck: Full-Color Storybook (Dover Little Activity Books)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (December, 1995)
Authors: Beatrix Potter and Anna Pomaska
Average review score:

My daughter LOVES ducks!
This is yet another endearing Beatrix Potter story. The pictures have the soft, cuddly appeal for which Mrs. Potter is known. The main character (a duck, of course) is lovingly naive and learns a valuable lesson about whom we can trust. And as always, the story ends with one of Beatrix Potters morals. Add to that the fact that my daughter thinks ducks are the greatest thing on earth and we had a very successful little read at my house.
